Why are you involved with the SNP?

Hi! I’m Wylie and I am the current London Branch Vice-convenor. I joined the SNP in the immediate aftermath of the 2014 Independence Referendum. It took losing that vote to make me realise how strongly I felt about the need for Scottish independence. David Cameron’s ‘EVEL’ speech on the steps of Downing Street on 19 September 2014 sealed the deal! Events since then, with Scotland dragged out of the EU against the wishes of the majority of the Scottish electorate, have further demonstrated why Scotland needs to be an independent nation once again.

My role in the Branch is to support the Convenor and other Committee members in the Branch’s political and social activities. To that end, I have organised many of our guest speakers, helped man our campaigning phone bank, and campaigned in several Scottish constituencies.

How is it to be part of the branch?

Since I joined the SNP I have campaigned in the Holyrood elections in 2016, the EU Referendum campaign in 2016, and the UK General elections in 2015 and 2019. Campaigning has taken me to Paisley, Renfrew, Edinburgh North and Leith, and the Banff & Buchan constituencies. Party colleagues have always been welcoming and grateful for the support. I have made many friends along the way. I have also assisted in writing several resolutions to conference and attended several conferences in Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Branch meetings are the mainstay of the Branch. We have had some fantastic speakers over the past five years. It is a great experience to participate in the meetings and to engage in debate with guest speakers and other members. It’s also good to have the opportunity to get together with politically like minded people monthly and make a contribution to the Scottish independence cause. Please join us!
